Blocks the adrule id: gendered-title

Gendered job titles

"Waitress", "foreman" and "salesman" name a sex, not a job.

Where the rule comes from

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act prohibits sex discrimination in hiring, and gendered titles have long been treated by the EEOC as expressing a sex preference. Neutral titles are also what candidates search for.

What the check flags

Job titles with a built-in sex: salesman, saleswoman, waitress, foreman, handyman, mailman, hostess.

Flagged

  • “Waitress wanted, weekends”
  • “Experienced foreman for framing crew”
  • “Handyman needed”

Says the same thing, passes

  • “Server wanted, weekends”
  • “Experienced crew lead for framing crew”
  • “Maintenance technician needed”
