Physical requirements in job ads

"Able-bodied" describes a person. "Lift 50 lb boxes repeatedly" describes the job.

Where the rule comes from

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) allows employers to require the essential functions of a job. It does not allow screening on a trait. The fix is to name the task.

What the check flags

Trait language standing in for a task: able-bodied, physically fit only, no disabilities.

Flagged

  • “Able-bodied workers only”
  • “Physically fit only, no exceptions”
  • “No disabilities”

Says the same thing, passes

  • “Lift 50 lb boxes repeatedly through an 8-hour shift”
  • “Stand and walk for the full shift”
  • “Climb ladders and work at height”

How HirePromo handles it

The parser rewrites the problem out of your ad copy, the original wording is shown to you with this rule cited, and you decide whether to change it.
